Start Here: Language Arts Step 3
 For Ages 10–14
A language arts course designed FOR spellers by a speller family.
What Is Step 3?
Step 3 is part of the Start Here: Language Arts for Spellers series, written for students ages 10–14 who use spelling to communicate. This year-long program moves beyond the basics, giving students the tools to better understand the tools of language arts.
Lessons are presented in a 4-day-per-week format and combine video lessons, activities, and language arts-targeted spell lessons—so learning is both accessible and engaging.
What Your Child Will Learn
Weeks 1–12: Grammar & Punctuation
Students strengthen their writing foundation by mastering parts of speech, sentence structure, and advanced punctuation. Topics include subjects and predicates, compound and complex sentences, pronouns and antecedents, verb tenses, prepositional phrases, conjunctions, and interjections. They’ll also refine their use of commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, and capitalization.
Weeks 13–24: Literary Analysis
Students learn to think like literary detectives—identifying plot, setting, and characters; analyzing conflict and resolution; recognizing theme and moral; and evaluating main ideas with supporting details. They’ll explore author’s purpose, figurative language, mood, tone, and point of view, and practice comparing and contrasting texts.
Weeks 25–36: Greek and Latin Roots Vocabulary
Students dive into the building blocks of the English language, learning how Greek and Latin roots form hundreds of words. Weekly focus roots include aud, vis/vid, scrib/script, port, tract, rupt, struct, bene/mal, therm, and photo. By year’s end, they’ll have a toolkit for decoding unfamiliar words and expanding their vocabulary.
