What Is Level A?

Level A Language Arts is the starting point in our Start Here: Language Arts series—designed especially for early learners and spellers ages 5–7. Over 36 weeks, your child will explore phonics, grammar, and punctuation in a way that is interactive, age-appropriate, and accessible for spellers at any stage—from beginners to openly communicating.

Every lesson blends visuals, hands-on activities, movement games, and spelling practice, ensuring your child connects sounds, letters, and words in meaningful ways.

What Your Child Will Learn

Weeks 1–12: Consonants & Consonant Blends
Your child will master the 21 consonant sounds, from familiar ones like /b/, /m/, and /t/ to trickier letters like x, y, and z. They’ll also explore blends like st, bl, dr, and pl, using sound bins, blend blocks, and picture-matching activities to make phonics come alive.

Weeks 13–24: Vowels & Vowel Teams
From short vowels (cat, bed, pin) to long vowel patterns (rain, boat, blue), students will build word families, sort vowel teams, and use hands-on word-building tools to connect patterns to meaning.

Weeks 25–36: Grammar & Punctuation
Students will be introduced to the building blocks of language—nouns, verbs, adjectives—and learn how to use capitals, periods, question marks, commas, and quotation marks in their own writing. By the end, they’ll be writing and spelling complete, correctly punctuated sentences.
